Why Amazon Stock Fell
Amazon published its third-quarter earnings report after the market closed on October 29. According to the company's official release, net sales rose 12% to $201.9 billion and operating income climbed to $28.1 billion from $17.4 billion, a 13.9% operating margin that Amazon called its highest ever. Net income fell to $20.7 billion, or $1.89 per diluted share, from $1.95 a year earlier, which the company attributed mainly to $9.5 billion of pre-tax gains on its Anthropic investments in the prior-year quarter.
Per the Illawarra Mercury report, analysts had expected $1.97 per share and $202.2 billion in revenue, citing FactSet. Amazon guided to fourth-quarter net sales of $240.0 billion to $247.0 billion, and the report noted that the midpoint of that range sits below the $244.16 billion analysts expected.
Amazon also said Prime Day shifted into the second quarter for most large countries this year, and that third-quarter sales growth would have been about 400 basis points higher without that shift.
AMZN Stock Analysis: Supporting Factors and Risks
Supporting Factors
AWS sales rose 39% to $46.0 billion and AWS operating income reached $17.8 billion, up from $11.4 billion, per the release. CEO Andy Jassy projected AWS revenue growth of over 40% in both 2027 and 2028, a company projection.
24/7 Wall St. reported that the AWS backlog rose to $578 billion.
Amazon guided to fourth-quarter operating income of $28.5 billion to $33.5 billion, compared with $25.0 billion a year earlier, and said it expects advertising revenue to grow in the high teens in the quarter.
Risks
Free cash flow for the trailing twelve months turned into an outflow of $42.4 billion, driven mainly by a $94.8 billion rise in purchases of property and equipment tied largely to AI, according to the release. Amazon still expects 2026 cash capital spending of about $220 billion.
Per 24/7 Wall St., management expects meaningfully higher spending in 2027, interest expense rose to $1.691 billion from $538 million a year earlier, and UBS analyst Stephen Ju said investors feared 2027 capital spending could exceed $300 billion.
TIKR noted that Anthropic now leases its own data centers, which it argued could cap further AWS gains from Anthropic beyond the $110 billion Anthropic has committed to AWS through 2036.
