Gotrade News - The Indonesian government confirms that national rice stocks are sufficient to meet demand for up to 10 months, a preparation for the anticipated 6-month Godzilla El Nino phenomenon.
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that current rice reserves at Bulog totaled 4.3 million tons, projected to exceed 5 million tons shortly. This move is crucial for maintaining food supply stability.
Amran highlighted that in addition to Bulog's reserves, hotels, restaurants, and households possess around 12.5 million tons of rice stocks. The potential harvest from land yielding about 11 million tons also boosts government optimism.
The total national food availability nears 27 million tons, ensuring food security even amid the threat of an extreme El Nino. Agriculture production remains steady thanks to pre-established infrastructure.
Lessons from the 2023 El Nino experience have been invaluable. The government successfully reduced rice import needs through strategic measures, including building infrastructure like water pumps and irrigation networks.
The Ministry of Public Works played a crucial role by enhancing the irrigation network to cover 2 million hectares. This target promotes increased planting frequency in various regions.
Monthly production is expected to reach at least 2 million tons, ensuring food availability through the next year. This demonstrates Indonesia's preparedness in facing drought challenges.
Infrastructure development and land optimization are key to the government's success in maintaining food supply stability. With these measures, national food security is increasingly assured.
Current food stocks are at an all-time high, providing added confidence in facing the upcoming challenges of Godzilla El Nino.
