Meta Bans TikTok/ByteDance Ads

Summary

  • Meta Platforms (META) banned ads from TikTok parent ByteDance on Facebook and Instagram in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • Meta said it does not have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off its apps, calling it normal business practice.
  • The ban also covers third-party campaigns linking to TikTok, escalating a feud that followed Meta's $18 billion child-safety settlement.

Gotrade News - Meta Platforms (META) has banned advertising from ByteDance, the Chinese parent of TikTok, on Facebook and Instagram in the US and six other countries, effective immediately, according to Bloomberg. The move escalates its rivalry with TikTok over users, creators and ad dollars.

The ban covers the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, according to Reuters via Investing.com. It also reaches third-party advertisers that run campaigns linking to TikTok and other ByteDance properties in those markets.

Meta Platforms (META): ByteDance Ads Blocked in 7 Countries

Meta spokesperson Chris Sgro framed the move as a competitive call rather than a policy enforcement action. "We don't have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps," Sgro said, as reported by Bloomberg.

"Declining promotional services to a competitor is a normal business practice across industries." Meta statement, per Reuters

According to Global Banking & Finance Review, which carried the Reuters report, Meta added that it "will continue to compete on product quality and user experience." That framing is Meta's own view of the decision; TikTok and ByteDance had not publicly commented on the action at the time of the Reuters report.

The scope matters because the restriction is not limited to ads bought by ByteDance itself. Per Reuters, any third-party campaign that sends users to TikTok or another ByteDance property in the seven named countries is also covered, which closes off a common workaround of routing app-install spend through agencies or partners.

Why the Meta and TikTok Feud Escalated

Bloomberg reported that tensions had already been building before the ban. TikTok removed Instagram links from user profiles and rejected Meta's own advertisements, according to the report, turning a product rivalry into a dispute over which platform will carry the other's promotions.

TikTok is one of Meta's most formidable competitors for user engagement, creators and advertising revenue, per Reuters. In the US, TikTok operates as a majority American-owned joint venture with more than 200 million US users, according to the Investing.com report.

The $18 Billion Child-Safety Settlement Behind the Fight

The ad ban follows Meta's $18 billion settlement with US states over social media harms to children. As reported by Bloomberg, Meta agreed in August to add new safety features for minors on Instagram and Facebook, and Reuters reported that the settlement requires daily usage limits and nighttime restrictions for minors.

Since then, Meta has pressed rivals to adopt comparable measures. Per Bloomberg, Meta pushed both TikTok and YouTube, owned by Alphabet (GOOGL), to implement similar child-safety steps, ran newspaper ads urging TikTok to comply, and publicly criticized TikTok for skipping a Surgeon General event on screen-time harms and withdrawing from a House Select Committee on China meeting.

TikTok reached its own separate settlement with Alabama in September over user-safety measures, according to the Investing.com report.

Platforms Turning Away Rival Ads

Meta is not the first large tech company to refuse ads from competitors. Bloomberg noted that OpenAI rejected ads for competing image and audio-generation products, as reported in September 2026. Meta's own justification, in Sgro's words, is that turning away a rival's promotion is standard practice across industries.
