Week Ahead: US CPI, Big Bank Earnings and TSMC in Focus

Gotrade News - This week tests US stocks on two fronts at once: the September CPI report and the official start of Q3 2026 earnings season from Wall Street's biggest banks. With the S&P 500 and Nasdaq still near record highs, there is little room for a negative surprise.

  • September CPI is forecast to rise to 3.6% YoY, which could revive rate-hike bets.
  • JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and other major banks open Q3 earnings season on Tuesday.
  • TSMC's Thursday report is a key test for AI sentiment after recent OpenAI worries.

This Week's Economic Calendar

On Monday (Oct 12), the US stock market is open, but the bond market is closed for Columbus Day. Trading may be relatively quiet until the major data starts to land.

Here are the key US releases to watch (US time):

  • Tuesday (Oct 13): NFIB Small Business Index, forecast at 98.0 from 98.7.
  • Wednesday (Oct 14): September CPI, forecast at 3.6% YoY from 3.4%, with Core CPI at 2.5% YoY. The Fed also publishes its Beige Book.
  • Thursday (Oct 15): PPI, Retail Sales (forecast up 0.3% MoM from 1.2%), Initial Jobless Claims (around 195K) and the Philly Fed Manufacturing Index.
  • Friday (Oct 16): Industrial Production, forecast up 0.4% MoM after a flat prior month.

Wednesday's CPI is the main event of the week. On a monthly basis, headline CPI is expected to rise 0.6%, faster than the prior month's 0.4%.

Why does it matter? The Fed raised rates by 25 basis points to a 3.75% to 4.00% range on September 16, its first hike since July 2023.

If both headline and Core CPI come in hotter than expected, markets may start pricing another hike at the October 27-28 FOMC meeting. A softer print, on the other hand, could give growth stocks some breathing room.

Fed officials are also scheduled to speak almost every day, including the Fed Chair on Friday. Their tone after the CPI release could shift rate expectations quickly.

Wednesday's Beige Book offers a snapshot of conditions across the Fed's 12 districts. It may show how policymakers read the impact of high energy prices on businesses and consumers.

Thursday's data also matters. Core PPI is forecast to rise 0.3% MoM from 0.2%, a signal of whether price pressure at the producer level is still building.

Retail Sales are expected to slow to 0.3% after last month's 1.2% jump. A sharper slowdown could suggest US consumers are starting to pull back as energy costs stay high.

Stocks to Watch

Q3 2026 earnings season officially starts this week, and expectations are already high. The spotlight is on banks and semiconductors.

Wall Street's big banks

Four major banks report before the open on Tuesday, with these consensus EPS estimates:

Reports continue on Wednesday and Thursday:

The numbers to watch are net interest income and credit quality. Higher rates can widen lending margins, but they also raise the risk of bad loans.

For JPMorgan, analysts expect net interest income to grow about 12%, while trading revenue is expected to decline. Management's view on the US economy will be closely watched.

Bank results often act as a mirror of the broader economy. If lenders see consumers and businesses holding up well, that could support wider market sentiment.

Healthcare

UnitedHealth (UNH) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) are also scheduled to report on Tuesday. Both offer a read on defensive sectors at a time when investors are wary of high rates.

TSMC

Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) reports before the US open on Thursday, with an EPS estimate of around $4.48 per ADR. For AI-linked stocks, this may be the most important report of the week.

Investors will focus on TSMC's AI revenue outlook and capital spending plans. Solid numbers could ease worries about AI chip demand, while weak guidance could weigh on the semiconductor sector.

Market Sentiment

US stocks enter this week in an unusual position. Major indexes sit near records despite three heavy pressures at once:

  • High oil prices: Brent is holding around $100 a barrel amid an energy shock tied to the conflict involving Iran.
  • High bond yields: The 10-year Treasury yield is holding above 5%, near its highest level in more than two decades.
  • A hawkish Fed: Most Fed officials expect further rate hikes before year-end.

AI sentiment also wobbled last week. On Thursday, the Nasdaq fell more than 1% on concerns that OpenAI's revenue was falling short of targets.

Stocks recovered on Friday, with the S&P 500 up 0.4% and the Nasdaq up 0.6%. The rebound followed reports that OpenAI expects annualized revenue to reach or exceed $70 billion by year-end.

Even so, the market remains highly sensitive to AI headlines. We see this week's sentiment as neutral, with a cautious tilt.

Three simple scenarios can help frame the week:

  • Hot CPI and weak bank guidance: profit-taking could pick up, especially in richly valued tech stocks.
  • In-line CPI: attention shifts to earnings details, so moves may vary more from stock to stock.
  • Softer CPI and strong TSMC results: the rally toward new records could extend.

Expect higher volatility, particularly around Wednesday's CPI release.
