Gotrade News - Two of the largest private AI bets on record moved forward this week. According to Seeking Alpha, citing Bloomberg News, a Wall Street syndicate is starting to gather a $60 billion financing package to fund AI chips from Broadcom (AVGO) for Anthropic and other companies, while SoftBank Group has completed the final $10 billion payment of its $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI.
Together, the two deals show how AI infrastructure is increasingly being funded with debt rather than cash on hand, a shift that puts chipmakers and their lenders closer to the fortunes of a small number of AI developers.
Broadcom's $60 Billion Chip Financing for Anthropic
As reported by AskTraders, which also cited Bloomberg, the package includes a $42 billion Class A senior-secured tranche, the top-ranking debt backed by collateral. Banks involved are poised to send out syndication letters for the debt, according to Seeking Alpha.
AskTraders reported that Anthropic carries a $125.2 billion five-year lease commitment for tensor processing units (TPUs), the custom AI processors Alphabet (GOOGL) designs with Broadcom. Per the same report, the financing could cover roughly one-third of that commitment.
Investors were cautious. Broadcom closed at $343.64 in its latest session, down 2.15% from $351.19 and 19.7% below its August 7 peak of $427.76, per AskTraders. Robert Leitao of Rothschild & Co told the outlet the market faces a concentration risk:
"It feels that there's quite a concentrated bet right now on two companies being able to generate enough revenues to support all the financing that's happened." (Robert Leitao, Rothschild & Co, via AskTraders)
SoftBank Completes $30 Billion OpenAI Follow-On
According to The Next Web, SoftBank paid the third and final $10 billion tranche on October 1, Japan time, after earlier payments on April 1 and July 1. The payment lifts its cumulative investment in OpenAI to $64.6 billion, for a stake of about 13%.
SoftBank funded the last tranche with proceeds from an $11.1 billion foreign-currency bond sale announced on September 24, The Next Web reported. The group also drew $30 billion of a $40 billion bridge loan signed in March, repaid $25.9 billion in early September, and cancelled the remaining $10 billion on September 30.
The commitment was part of OpenAI's $122 billion funding round at an $852 billion valuation, per The Next Web. Other major backers in that round include Amazon, with a $50 billion commitment, and Nvidia (NVDA), with $30 billion.
