Gotrade News - Asian chip stocks sold off hard on Thursday, October 15, as SK Hynix closed down 11.06%, Samsung Electronics fell 9.48% and SoftBank Group lost 9.33%, according to TradingKey.
Hotter US inflation revived Federal Reserve rate-hike fears and raised worries about the cost of financing AI infrastructure.
The rout followed a weak US session for AI-linked names, where Nvidia (NVDA) lost 3.2%, AMD (AMD) declined 5.7% and Broadcom (AVGO) gave up 3.1%, as reported by the Associated Press.

Why Did SK Hynix, Samsung and SoftBank Fall?
The trigger was US inflation. Per the Associated Press, US consumer prices rose 3.7% year on year in September, up from 3.4% in August and worse than economists expected.
Bond yields added pressure. The 10-year Treasury yield was at 5.11% early Thursday after briefly topping 5.32% on Wednesday, and it reached 5.35% earlier in the month, its highest since 2002, according to the AP. Rising Treasury yields matter for AI because, as TradingKey reported, investors worried that high rates would raise the cost of data center construction and equipment, pressuring earnings and future investment.
Lorraine Tan, Morningstar's director of equity research for Asia, told the AP that the problem for tech-heavy markets such as Korea and Taiwan is that "any risk to perceived AI spending growth" could slow demand for chips and equipment.
SK Hynix and Samsung Drag the Kospi Down 7.57%
South Korea's Kospi closed down 7.57% at 5,554.23 points after falling as much as 9% intraday, according to TradingKey. SK Hynix ended at 1.262 million won and Samsung Electronics at 210,000 won.
The slide triggered a 20-minute trading halt on the Kospi from 12:38 p.m. local time, the tenth circuit breaker on the index this year, per TradingKey. South Korean financial regulators then held an emergency meeting, pledged to maintain market stability and said they would activate contingency plans if necessary.
The AP noted the Kospi is down more than 16% over the past month and well below the 9,000 level it crossed in June, a high driven by optimism about the AI boom.
SoftBank and Japan's Chip Names Pull the Nikkei Down 4.90%
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 closed down 4.90% at 64,425.90, SoftBank Group finished at 4,852 yen and memory maker Kioxia dropped 12.32%, according to TradingKey. The AP described SoftBank as an OpenAI investor.
Chip equipment names fell too. As reported by TokenPost, Advantest fell 6.9% while Tokyo Electron and Renesas Electronics each lost 5.4% during the session.
The Asian moves came after the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.88% to 26,692.87 and the S&P 500 dropped 1.11% to 7,718.94 on Wednesday, according to TokenPost. TradingKey said Oracle and CoreWeave also dropped sharply in that session.
Not every chip name followed the same script. Per the AP, Taiwan's TSMC dropped 2% even after reporting better-than-expected quarterly profit and saying AI demand remains "very strong."
