Gotrade News - Gold slipped 0.1% to $4,137.84 an ounce early Tuesday, October 20, after falling 0.6% on Monday, as Brent crude near $110 fed inflation fears and bets on a December Fed hike, per Investing.com. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) and iShares Gold Trust (IAU) hold bullion and track that price.

Silver took the bigger hit last week. Spot gold ended the week down about 0.7% while silver fell more than 6%, according to HSL Prime Research on HDFC Sky, a drop in the metal held by iShares Silver Trust (SLV).

What Moved Gold This Week?

Energy-driven inflation moved gold. US consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier in September, with gasoline up 9.1%, and CME FedWatch data cited by Investing.com put the odds of a Fed rate hike in December at 94%.

The same data showed an 83% chance the Fed holds at its October 27-28 meeting, after a quarter-point hike in September lifted its target range to 3.75%-4.00%.

Investing.com noted that gold, which pays no interest, tends to lose appeal when interest rates and bond yields rise.

Brent crude traded above $109 a barrel on Tuesday after touching a five-month high of $110.70 in the prior session, as Yemen's Houthi group said it attacked Saudi energy targets, including an Aramco facility.

HSL Prime Research tied last week's precious metals selloff to hotter-than-expected US inflation data, including producer prices that rose at their fastest pace in four and a half years in September.

Over the same week, it said, crude surged more than 6% to a one-month high on tight supply, higher risk premiums for Strait of Hormuz cargoes and Ukraine's strikes on Russian refineries.

Gas prices climbed too. Asian spot LNG rose to $30.4 per million British thermal units on Monday, its highest since December 2022, according to traders cited by Bloomberg News, as republished by Bloomberg Technoz.

UK Maritime Trade Operations received a report that an LNG carrier was fired on near Yemen on Saturday, the article said.

Copper did not follow energy higher. Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange fell 0.4% to $14,342 a metric ton by 1600 GMT on Monday, as registered stocks rose to a two-month high and workers at Antofagasta's Centinela mine ended a strike, Reuters reported via Kitco. The metal hit a record $14,875 a ton on September 10.

How Does a Gold ETF Differ From Owning Physical Gold?

A gold ETF share is a stake in a trust whose custodian stores the metal, while a buyer of physical gold holds the bars or coins directly. These exchange-traded commodity funds trade like stocks: GLD is listed on NYSE Arca, according to State Street.

Custody sits with large banks. State Street lists HSBC Bank plc and JPMorgan Chase Bank as GLD's custodians, and the iShares filings name JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A., London Branch, as the custodian responsible for safekeeping IAU's gold and SLV's silver.

Fees shape tracking. The iShares sponsor's fee accrues daily at an annualized 0.25% of net asset value for IAU and 0.50% for SLV, per the filings, and State Street says GLD aims to reflect the price of gold bullion, less expenses.
