Gotrade News - The exclusive partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI officially ended on Monday (27/04). At the same time, Qualcomm rallied more than 3% on reports of an AI smartphone partnership with OpenAI and MediaTek.
- Microsoft loses exclusive access to OpenAI technology, opening distribution paths through Amazon and Google.
- Microsoft retains its primary cloud partner status with IP licensing valid through 2032.
- Qualcomm is reportedly partnering with OpenAI and MediaTek to build an AI-first smartphone chipset.
Microsoft previously held exclusive distribution rights over OpenAI technology from the original partnership. The loosening allows OpenAI to strike direct deals with rival cloud platforms.
Amazon and Google now sit as the most likely next cloud distribution partners for OpenAI. Financial Times reported in March on a potential $50 billion cloud deal that had been a source of friction.
Despite losing exclusivity, Microsoft retains several strategic rights inside the partnership. It remains the primary cloud partner and keeps first-ship rights before products land on rival platforms.
The ChatGPT IP license to Microsoft remains valid through 2032 under the renegotiated terms. Microsoft also has no revenue-sharing obligation back to OpenAI in the updated structure.
Microsoft shares slipped roughly 1% in premarket trading before the bell on Monday. Investors view the looser partnership as a chip out of Microsoft's competitive moat in AI.
The opposite reaction came from Qualcomm, which jumped more than 3% on the same Monday session. TF International Securities reported that Qualcomm is co-developing smartphone processors with OpenAI.
The AI smartphone is expected to combine Qualcomm and MediaTek silicon under an OpenAI-led design. Technical specifications and launch timing have not been officially confirmed by any of the three parties.
This positioning makes Qualcomm an early winner from the loosened Microsoft-OpenAI relationship. OpenAI's broader supplier diversification opens room for chipmakers outside Nvidia's orbit.
For retail investors, the shift moves the AI competitive map from single-axis to a more fluid ecosystem. Exposure to chip names like Qualcomm warrants a fresh look as the AI smartphone theme builds.
