Asia Chip & AI Stocks Swing (SK Hynix, SoftBank, Nikkei, Nvidia vs TSMC)

Gotrade News - Asia's chip and AI trade swung higher on Monday (October 5), as Japan's Nikkei 225 jumped 2.4% to 69,946.86 on softer US jobs data, while Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) hit a record in New York and SK Hynix stayed stuck below a key moving average in Seoul.

The moves show a rally that is broad in Tokyo and Taipei but still hesitant in Korean memory names. According to IBTimes Australia, semiconductor and AI shares led Tokyo's advance on overseas buying of Nikkei futures after the September US jobs report cooled bets on another Federal Reserve rate hike.

Key Takeaways

  • The Nikkei 225 briefly crossed 70,000 for the first time since early July before closing at 69,946.86.
  • TSMC (TSM) set an all-time high after Elon Musk confirmed early talks with his Terafab chip venture.
  • SK Hynix is trading below its 20-day moving average, and Investing.com's technical read tilts short-term risk to the downside.

Nikkei Tops 70,000 Intraday as SoftBank and Tokyo Electron Rally

Per IBTimes Australia, the Nikkei 225 gained 1,637.40 points and touched an intraday high of about 70,072, while the broader Topix rose about 1.1% to 4,136.61. Tokyo Electron climbed about 5.6% and Advantest about 4.8%, supported by demand for chipmaking and testing equipment.

SoftBank Group rose nearly 4% and traded as high as 6,558 yen, as reported by IBTimes Australia, which noted the group's large stake in OpenAI. That stake keeps SoftBank tied to the wider AI financing story that has moved the stock through 2026.

"Money is coming back in particular to data-center shares that had been hurt by rising interest rates," analyst Kentaro Shida said, according to IBTimes Australia.

TSMC (TSM) Hits a Record on Terafab Talks

According to Yahoo Finance, Taiwan Semiconductor stock rose to an all-time high on Monday after tech journalist Tim Culpan reported that TSMC is exploring ways to help Musk's Terafab run its new semiconductor factories in Texas. Musk responded on X: "Just discussions, but something may come of it."

Yahoo Finance reported that the stock is up more than 60% year to date, driven by AI demand, as TSMC expands US manufacturing for clients including Apple, Nvidia and AMD. Nvidia does not produce its own chips at scale, so TSMC's capacity plans remain a direct read-through for the AI chip supply chain.

Intel (INTC) Slips as Terafab Looks at TSMC

The Terafab news weighed on Intel (INTC), which joined the venture in April and declined more than 2%, as reported by Yahoo Finance. Terafab is Musk's plan to build a major chip facility serving Tesla, SpaceX and xAI, so any role for TSMC raises questions about how the work would be shared.

SK Hynix Trapped Below Its SMA20 at 1,813,000 Won

In Seoul, SK Hynix traded at 1,813,000 won, below its 20-day simple moving average of 1,822,250 won, according to an Investing.com technical update. The report described the setup as a "range consolidation, not yet resolved," with support from the 50-day average at 1,770,000 won and the 200-day average sitting higher at 1,955,505 won.

Investing.com added that the MACD "has crossed negative, tilting short-term risk to the downside until reversed," and that volatility is compressed, with the average true range at 2.4% of price.
